A new chapter has begun in the life of Catford's theatre. Renamed The Broadway Theatre, the Grade II listed building opened in 1932 and is a wonderful example of 1930s' art deco architecture.

There has been little investment in the building for nearly 20 years and many of the original features were covered over for many years. But now around £2.3m is being spent on a complete refurbishment which will take more than five months.

The stunning new foyer and bar restorations are the first parts of the phased work to be completed in original art deco style.

But it is perhaps the basement where the most exciting work is going on. The 100-seat Broadway Studio Theatre is being enhanced and a rehearsal room, workshop and art gallery are being added. This phase is due to be completed in time for Alexie Sayle's comic book reading on November 24.

The Studio is set to become a dynamic new professional theatre presenting innovative and exciting repertoire and two new partnerships are going to help make this happen. The Gateway Theatre Company will present a continuous season of drama while the nationally-acclaimed Lewisham Youth Theatre will be taking up a three-year residency at The Studio, where they will build a youth drama education programme.

The Gateway Theatre's joint artistic director Sally Grieg said: "Gateway Theatre Company has one clear intention: to always produce exceptional theatre which entertains, affects and inspires audiences.

"Whether it is a popular play, new writing, educational theatre or pieces with a difficult subject matter you can be assured the quality will never be compromised."

Catch Alexie Sayle, as he entertains and takes questions from the audience in the intimate surroundings of The Studio and have a look around this historic building.
