Merton: Police are sending out a message of zero tolerance to racists in an attempt to reassure Merton Muslims in the aftermath of the US terrorist attacks.

Chief Superintendent Stephen Thomas has recognised the growing concern of the boroughs Muslims who have been the target of abuse and death threats since September 11.

Chief Supt Thomas said he understood why Muslim people were fearful of being targeted for racist attacks and following an increase in racial incidents, wanted to reassure them.

The police chief is determined to prevent such incidents reoccurring.

Foot patrols have been increased around mosques and extra mobile patrols have been deployed, to respond quickly to racist reports.

MP's Roger Casale and Siobhain McDonagh have written to Muslim leaders to offer assurance and solidarity and to ask them to report any racist incidents.

The politicians wrote: "I would like to reiterate that everyone is appreciated as a full member of our community and that the concerns that you face at the present time are those of the community as a whole and will be treated as such."

To report race crimes call Merton control room on 020 8947 1212.
