Enfield 0 Hendon 6
Ryman League Premier Division
Hendon produced their biggest league victory for eight seasons when they routed old rivals Enfield at Boreham Wood FC on Saturday.
A quick glance at the league table before the match showed the importance of the win. Had Hendon lost, Enfield would have been just two points behind the Greens with a better goal difference. Now the gap is seven places, eight points and 13 goals.
Hendon gave a debut to new signing midfielder Scott Forbes, who has joined from Braintree, while a second newcomer, much-travelled Joe Nartey, signed from Enfield, was on the bench.
Manager Dave Anderson gambled on a reshaped line-up with Byron Bubb and Dale Binns wide, Forbes and Jon-Barrie Bates central in midfield; up front on-loan striker Paul Fewings partnered Eugene Ofori, while Phil Ruggles was rested. It proved aninspired selection.
The goal chart read: 8mins 1-0: Eugene Ofori tried his luck with a snapshot from 20 yards that crept inside the post.
39mins 2-0: Byron Bubb sent a perfect pass in for Paul Fewings to slip the ball past keeper Keith Addai.
55mins 3-0: For the second time, Bubb set up a goal with an incisive pass. This time, it was Ofori who profited as he outjumped Grant Cooper, six inches taller, and drove the loose ball past Addai.
75mins 4-0: After Ofori was crudely taken out by Cooper, Bubb sent a free-kick wide of the Enfield wall and it seemed to be missing the goal by a couple of yards. Then the spin Bubb had imparted took effect and it ended up a yard inside the post.
82mins 5-0: After Hendon keeper Dave Hook made his second magnificent save of the afternoon, he started the move for the next goal with a throw to Ross Pickett, who sent Dale Binns away to beat the cover and send in a low cross that was deflected into the net by Simon Peddie.
86mins 6-0: Pickett, from just outside his own penalty area, launched a huge kick downfield, and substitute Nartey gave chase.
Keeper Addai was outside the penalty area, and had to use his head to clear but he was outjumped by Nartey, whose effort bounced into the unguarded net.
Anderson said: "Ten days ago, I said I was more concerned about the fact that we had conceded nine goals in three games, scoring only one. Well, in the last three games, we have scored 13 and let in just one, and that was in injury time. We did really well."
HENDON: Hook, Woolner, Clarke, Forbes (Pickett 38), Towler, Cooper, Bubb, Bates (Watson 77), Fewings (Nartey 65), Ofori, Binns.
