Over the past couple of years we have had mail wrongly delivered to us and last week my neighbour found a letter on our drive which he promptly delivered to the right address.
Yesterday we received a letter for No 5 in the next road again. Today, Wednesday, November 7, 2001, we received a card for a recorded delivery parcel, which was required urgently.
Had the postman rung our doorbell, which he or she did not bother to do, it would have been answered. My wife drove around to our sorting office, in Glengall Road, Bexleyheath to collect the parcel, this was at 12.15 pm.
The poor man behind the counter looked everywhere for it but couldn't find it. Eventually he told her a night duty postman had done overtime by delivering some of the morning post, then gone home to bed after leaving a card to pick the parcel up before 12.30pm.
The parcel was posted last Friday using "recorded delivery". Tut tut! What has happened to our once great postal service. At least we now know how and why our post is all over the place. It's being delivered by the walking dead straight off night duty. Incidentally, I did shift work for 30 years, nights, lates and earlies.
