THE hunt is on in Bromley for water voles, an endangered creature whose numbers have fallen by 95 per cent over the last century.

Wildlife enthusiasts have been encouraged to report sightings of voles by The London Water Vole Project, a new initiative developed to reverse the decline.

Experts believe loss of suitable habitat, the spread of the American mink and the perils of the urban environment have contributed to the plight of the water vole.

Anyone wishing to report a sighting, or volunteer to help survey London's waterways should call project officer Chris Strachan on 020 7921 5474.
