WELCOME to the new monthly Volunteer Corner featuring news about local organisations and the opportunities for volunteering through the Epping Forest Volunteer Bureau.o
We serve the volunteer needs of organisations in the Epping Forest district, attempting to match their requirements with potential volunteers' skills and the time they have available.
There are already some 100 voluntary groups on the bureau's books.
I'm especially keen to hear from new ones who need unpaid help. Please let me know what you are doing, particularly any short-term projects that need special mention.
Who volunteers? Almost anyone! Whether you are young or old, able-bodied or disabled, have lots of spare time or a little, you can make a practical contribution to the community and also gain great personal satisfaction.
Perhaps you would like to spend one night a week out of the house doing something completely different from your day job. You could be between jobs or education and want to brush up your skills and make useful contacts during the daytime.
You may be retired and would now like to give something back. Whatever your motivation, there are many non-profit-making groups keen to harness your skills.
Everyone has skills, many of which are learnt through life experience, not just professionally.
For example, you may be a good listener, enjoy driving or be a dab hand at DIY. If you care for family members, you would undoubtedly have many abilities which you probably take for granted.
What happens when you offer to volunteer?
First, I or a colleague will meet you to discuss your requirements. You will have to complete a simple registration form, nominating two referees. There may already be a vacancy which meets your needs. We have many on file. If nothing immediately appeals, we will retain your details and contact you when a suitable opportunity arises.
Jo Price, who was fundraising administrator at St Clare Hospice, is now with the Epping Forest Volunteer Bureau at Homefield House, behind the Civic Offices in Epping High Street. For more information on volunteering, phone her on 01992 564256.
