THE take-up of the free flu vaccination by the over-65s in the North Essex Health Authority area which includes the Epping Forest district is seven per cent up on the same point last year.

Halfway through the campaign, 55.6 per cent of over-65s have been vaccinated, compared with 48.6 per cent last year.

The government's minimum target uptake this year is 65 per cent, up from 60 per cent last year when the health authority achieved 64 per cent.

Dr Sally Millership, the authority's consultant in communicable diseases, said: "We are very pleased with the increased take-up but we are also conscious that the important figure is the end figure.

"I would urge GP practices to continue encouraging patients along and I would remind those eligible for a free flu vaccination not to delay."

It is hoped to have all vaccinations given by early December.

People who qualify for a free vaccination are urged to call their surgery to make an appointment.
