Plans to extend the DLR to Woolwich have been met with massive public approval.

More than 10,000 questionnaires were sent out to residents and 95 per cent of those returned were in favour of extending the railway line from north of the river.

The 2.5km preferred route will be mainly contained in a tunnel, with trains surfacing near Burrage Road, at Woolwich Arsenal Station.

DLR general manager Howard Smith said: "Further detailing on the proposed extension from North Woolwich is now underway and, with Ken Livingstone's approval, it is hoped to submit an application next year for powers to build."

According to schedule construction could start in late 2004 with an expected opening date in 2007, which includes a 12-month commissioning and testing period.
