THE idea of a fridge mountain is bizarre but, worryingly, it could indeed become a reality.

When EU regulations come into force in January it will be illegal for councils to dispose of fridges in the old way.

It seems that inside the fridges are cylinders which contain gases that are harmful to the earth's protective ozone layer. These will soon have to be removed from the fridges and disposed of separately.

What is most frightening is that the old system was allowed to continue for so long. Why was it thought suitable that the cylinders could be crushed, releasing gases into the atmosphere?

The new regulations are obviously better late than never, but it does make you think that there are potentially many other similar systems in place that are damaging to both humans and the environment.

ITS a tremendous gesture by Haven House's mysterious benefactor.

After reading articles about the children's hospice's eviction threat, the businessman has stepped in at the 11th hour to save it.

His efforts are admirable, as is the response from the community as a whole. Since the news first broke, hundreds of people have phoned the hospice and sent in their support to the Guardian, fighting to keep the hospice dream alive.

Fingers crossed that all the relevant papers are signed and completed with Waltham Forest Council in the next few days.
