I READ with great interest the two-page spread about the Kray twins (last week's Guardian). How right the Guardian was to say that they had their admirers.

I have never been able to understand why they were so admired. Using thuggery, menace and murder, they stole, swindled and cheated in order to make a living.

They could not even manage to complete their national service. They went to prison instead.

What their many admirers fail to understand is that if everyone in society wanted to be a violent career criminal, Britain today would be a bankrupt hell on earth, and that certainly wouldn't be anything to be proud of, would it?
