A NEW scheme where residents remove graffiti could be among the first of its kind in the country.

The scheme was started through community group Pensioners Against Litter (PAL), which was formed 11 years ago, and more than 50 Petts Wood residents have been trained and equipped to get rid of graffiti as soon as it is spotted.

PAL founder Ben Sullivan said: "I'm very pleased so many residents have got involved.

"Graffiti can make an area look run down and hopefully we can keep many places clean for good, if we keep getting rid of the tags as soon as they appear."

So far, the graffiti-busting residents have tackled illegal scrawls at the Petts Wood recreation ground, off Eynsford Close, and dogwalkers have painted over any tags which have appeared on their daily routes.

Funding for the project has come from Connex, Railtrack, Safeway and Bromley Council.

Council cleansing contract manager Judy Thorpe said: "We can't be sure if this kind of sceme is unique but it's certainly the first pilot scheme of its kind in this borough.

"It's good to see residents taking the initiative and it certainly saves us time and money and gets it cleared up faster."
