IN the week we see the general release of the eagerly awaited film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, five small traders will be going to the High Court to appeal against their prosecution for selling or labelling their goods in imperial measures.

And what is the connection? Four of the seven-book series already published to huge acclaim and excitement, use the imperial system exclusively. The film is a masterpiece of wizardry and set to become an all-time classic, even the platform number for the Hogwarts train is 9 and not 9.75! The millions of children who have read the books will be joined by ever growing numbers who will do so after seeing the film and will be absorbing a system of weights and measures this government is trying to abolish.

It is anticipated that these books could become the most renowned in children's literature and generations will be brought up on the tales of a boy who lives in a world of imperial measures. J.K.Rowling, by the way, is an honorary member of the British Weights and Measures Association.
