CAN anyone explain what appears to me to be inexplicable. I refer to the traffic management scheme that took so long in Leytonstone High Road, between Gainsborough Road and Church Lane.
I can understand the wish to make the High Road one-way only over that stretch, but in this country we drive on the left. Logic says, therefore, that traffic going down from the Green Man should continue straight down the High Road or turn right into Gainsborough Road, either without interruption.
The traffic coming up High Road, should turn left into Church Lane and come back into the High Road with left turn from Gainsborough Road again without interruption. However the reverse has been imposed so that the downhill traffic has to cross in front of the uphill traffic at both junctions.
This necessitates traffic lights with alternating flows including three phases at Gainsborough Road to let other traffic out. The result is a regular tail-back of traffic to the Green Man roundabout and stationary vehicles everywhere.
