ARMED police officers who shot a 62-year-old man following a tense nine-hour siege in his home are now under investigation by police watchdogs.

The man, Michael Malsbury, of Eastleigh Avenue, Rayners Lane, died less than an hour after he was shot on Wednesday last week.

Officers had been called to the property at 3.24am by London Ambulance Service after treating a 40-year-old woman, believed to be his wife, who had been assaulted.

A police spokeswoman revealed that the woman had suffered head and arm injuries in what they say was a domestic incident.

Mr Malsbury barricaded himself in a bedroom saying he had a gun and armed police from SO19 (Firearms Unit) attended the scene and waited outside for several hours until a shot was fired at 1pm.

"Armed police responded and a man with a gunshot wound was taken to Northwick Park Hospital and pronounced dead at 1.56pm," the spokeswoman added.

A post mortem the next day gave cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Sarah Woodcock, a spokeswoman for the Police Complaints Authority, explained that it will conduct an inquiry. "The handling of the case will be scrutinised. The PCA will decide whether to take disciplinary action against officers."
