DRUNKEN thugs terrorising the town centre could become a problem of the past with police, the council and licensees launching a new initiative.

Owners and managers of licensed premises in Spelthorne have signed an agreement to improve closed circuit television facilities and ensure drunk patrons are not served as part of a campaign to reduce alcohol-related violence.

Police will reinforce the agreement with extra patrols led by a senior officer in the town centre during the evenings, especially at the weekend.

Chief Inspector Guy Darby said: "This will send out a positive signal that we will not tolerate these largely drink related crimes.

"The pub and club owners are giving us one hundred per cent support and if someone is banned from any one of the premises in town, they will be banned from all. Anyone who appears drunk will be turned away from licensed premises immediately.

"I have a clear message to the public. Come to Staines and have a good time, but behave properly. If you don't you will end the night in the cells and go to court the following day."

Nine licensees signed the agreement on Monday.
