Brentford 1 (Nov 17)
Morecambe 0
Following their tentative victory over non-league Morecambe on Saturday, the Bees were handed a second home tie against Third Division Scunthorpe.
As is often the case in the FA Cup, the underdogs rose to the occasion and it was difficult to see the difference in class between Brentford, riding high in Division Two and the visitors from the Nationwide Conference.
It took a marvellous strike on 77 minutes from Paul Gibbs to separate the sides. Gibbs received a through ball, dragged it down with his left foot and in one move turned and fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
But he admitted that he was never confident that it was going in. "Once I let fly I was looking up at the scoreboard because I've hit that a few times," he said.
The Bees took a little time to settle and it was eight minutes before they put together a move of real note. Michael Dobson down the right flank left Lee Colkin in his wake before centring for Lloyd Owusu. The striker turned to connect with the ball at the near post, only to see it pushed wide for the games first corner.
After 35 minutes, Morecambe came as close as they would all afternoon. A loose shot from Stewart Drummond found its way to Thompson who casually back heeled the ball goalwards. But Gottskalksson saved at full stretch.
With the scoreline goalless at the break, thoughts went back 12 months to a similar scoreline against Kingstonian. But this Bees side certainly didnt look a side that would wilt as happened in November 2000.
The Bees forced a number of corners at the start of the second half and 12 minutes in, Martin Rowlands replaced O'Connor. After Gibbs' goal, the visitors pressed but were held at bay by the Bees' solid defence which safely shepherded the club into Round Two.
