A new radio station broadcasting to the Jewish community in Barnet is due to go on air in January next year from its Hendon studios, after being granted a 28-day licence this week.

Shalom FM will be going live on 87.9FM on January 6 from its Egerton Gardens studios, broadcasting a mix of news, religious programmes and music to an area covering Hendon, Finchley, Golders Green and Mill Hill.

The station was granted a temporary licence from the Radio Authority on Wednesday last week, and founder Richard Ford said it would provide a service currently lacking in Barnet.

"Virtually every other community has its own voice," he said. "Now the Jewish community will have one too.

"But it won't just be a political station, we'll be looking to attract the under-30s in a special drive-time programme and there will be religious programmes, phone-ins, interviews and lots of music as well as the latest news from the UK and abroad and all the local news and sports."

The station is still looking for volunteers, and anyone interested can contact Mr Ford on 07000 254638.
