We go by car to supermarkets. No longer do we take the healthy option of walking down the road to the local shops and say hello to neighbours on the way.
We send emails (most of us, but not me) to relatives abroad, not even giving them the pleasure of hearing our voices. This has also taken the place of letter writing, enabling us to enclose a photograph.
An ethereal voice on the telephone, to my way of thinking, does not replace the holding of a letter or photograph in the hand. Where has the friendliness of visiting our neighbours gone?
No-one has the time anymore for a friendly chat over the garden fence, even if the garden fence does allow it.
If it is too high, it therefore cuts one off from the sun and sky as well as one's neighbours, and gives a feeling of imprisonment despite the desire for privacy.
