"This time I have written a work that is all clarity and vivacity, full of colour and melody. It will be entertaining," wrote George Bizet in 1873 when he finished the music for Carmen writes Linda Kirby.

From the first rise of the baton from conductor Tadeusz Kozlowski until he bowed his head over three hours later, the performance at Fairfield proved Bizet right.

The Polish State Opera Krakow presented this opera to a full house on Monday, November12.

The tale of passion and betrayal is relived through the memories of the imprisoned Don Jose. His dreams and his nightmares of his beloved Carmen were brought to life with such splendour and colour. The vivid scenery, costumes and clever lighting all contributed to a wonderful evening.

The orchestra were super under the fine guidance of Mr Kozlowski. The part of Carmen, thought to be the most successful mezzo role in opera, was sung by Bozena Zawislak-Dolny. She gave us a strong, sexy and sassy Carmen. The wonderful voice of Kuk Tomasz as the accursed love victim Don Jose was superb and filled me with emotion.

Sadly the voice of Escamillo El Toreador', although melodic, lacked strength. Sitting close to the front this was no problem for me but I'm not sure those near the back of the concert hall could hear him. Everyone appreciated the exciting performances from the gypsy girls Frasquita and Mercedes.

I was thrilled to have the experience of affordable, quality opera so close to home. The excellent singing, acting, dancing and the beautiful orchestra of the Polish State Opera made me comprehend this classic work, and give me the taste to explore the world of opera further.
