Mayday Hospital's human resources director Caron Hitchin and medical director Syamala Thomas sampled some of the services on offer to patients from ethnic communities last week.

A halal menu included keema peas and red kidney beans and poached haddock was kosher.

Also on display in the hospital's reception area were translated guides to the NHS, information about on-the-spot telephone translation and a bilingual health advocate pilot scheme designed to make sure no symptom, emotion, complaint or available service is overlooked.
