Local voluntary groups working with the borough's most vulnerable adults and elderly people are being invited to apply for from the council's social services department.
Social services has been grant aiding local voluntary groups for many years and it would now like to hear from any group working with people with learning, mental health and physical disabilities, older people and those needing specialist care that would like to bid for funding.
The next deadline for funding applications is 20 January 2002.
Funds are available for the core running costs of groups, and one-off items of expenditure, to enable groups to help carers, disabled and/or elderly people, and vulnerable people from ethnic minorities.
Last year funding went to a range of groups. Small grants (awarded annually) included:
o £220 to Croydon International Voluntary Service for volunteers expenses and gardening equipment.
o£490 to Croydon Aphasia Self Help Group for running costs.
o£1,215 to Addiscombe Depression Self Help Group for meeting costs, and to run three one-day courses on depression issues.
o £3,000 to Samaddoon Somali Support Group to start up their Wayeel Project.
Large grants (awarded as 3-year contracts) included:
o £41,997 to Westbury Senior Citizens for day care for Afro-Caribbean Elders.
o £86,444 to Croydon Churches Housing Association for a range of housing support for people with a mental health problem.
o£246,613 to Crossroads for carers services.
Councillor Paula Shaw , cabinet member for social services, said: "Voluntary groups and organisations in the borough play a vital role in supporting the work of social services.
"The Community Care Grants Panel meets three times a year to consider funding for voluntary sector groups helping vulnerable people in the borough and we would now like to hear from any group that would like to bid, including groups that are just starting up as well as established organisations."
