(Essex Senior League)AN IMPRESSIVE display from Jamie Hussey in the Leyton goal saw the home side leap-frog Enfield to go top of the league in a game of little skill on Saturday.

With both sides intent on cancelling each other out rather than putting on a spectacle, it was a case of real rearguard action, which guided Leyton to the pinnacle of the table for the first time since their return to senior amateur football three seasons ago.

They made the breakthrough against the run of play on 19 minutes when Dave Reilly was on hand to tap home the loose ball after Andy Hall had pulled off a fine save from a long-range shot.

Town hit back strongly, with Brad Brotherton having an effort hacked clear off the goal line following a corner on 37 minutes.

It was panic stations in the Leyton defence five minutes later when Harrison miss-kicked a Stuart Snowden throw narrowly over his own crossbar for another corner.

Although Town were unable to take advantage they continued to control proceedings in an opening half which saw three Leyton players booked compared with one for Town.

Leyton again found themselves under a mountain of pressure after the restart as they appeared to be content on defending deep and sitting back on Reilly's lone goal.

As Town took control both Danny Clarke and Danny Alleyne used their pace to continually get behind Leyton's back four, although the league's top scorers were constantly frustrated by the in-form Jamie Hussey.

E's captain Brad Brotherton also pressed forward at every opportunity in search of an equaliser, but he also could find no way past the impressive Hussey.

It will be interesting to see what tactics Leyton adopt when they face Town at Brimsdown in the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy.
