RESIDENTS of Blackboy Lane, Tottenham, staged a road safety protest last week.
More than 100 campaigners brought traffic to a standstill last Saturday as they marched through the area carrying billboards.
Since neighbouring roads were closed residents claim more motorists are using Blackboy Lane as a rat-run and the volume of traffic is compromising the safety of pedestrians.
Marie Wilmots, the chairwoman of Blackboy Lane and Woodlands Park residential associations and one of the organisers of the protest, said: "You can't cross the road with your shopping without taking your life in your hands."
The groups are campaigning for traffic calming, safe crossings, a 20mph speed limit and the cancellation of at least one of the bus routes that use the road.
Two people have died as a result of road traffic accidents in Blackboy Lane this year and another hit-and-run incident caused serious injury to a woman.
Organisers were pleased with the demonstration and praised the stewarding by the police.
The groups also presented their ideas to a meeting of Haringey Council's strategy committee.
Another larger demonstration is being organised to take place in Blackboy Lane on December 8.
