A NEW lecture room is the latest addition to a listed monument to Victorian engineering.
The Crossness Beam Engine House, in Belvedere, contains four steam-driven beam engines built as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's sewage system for London in the late 1800s.
The building and two of its engines are being lovingly restored by enthusiasts who make up the Crossness Engines Trust and the engine house is now a magnet for students and schoolchildren for a variety of educational visits.
Trust member David Wilkinson has donated the money to turn a part of the building into a lecture room for visiting groups. He and other trust members George Olmit, Peter Baker and Jill Wilkinson carried out the conversion work.
The lecture room was opened by Bexley's mayor Councillor Aileen Beckwith and a plaque in the room pays tribute to their work.
