A MASSIVE street fight in Anerley left a man fighting for his life in hospital after he was stabbed repeatedly.

Police and paramedics were called out after receiving reports of a group of men fighting near Euro Foods, in Anerley Hill, near the junction with Brunswick Place. They found two men being attacked by a much larger group.

A 23-year-old man, whose name was not released by police, was rushed by ambulance to Kings College Hospital where he was treated for stab wounds to his abdomen, back and arms. He also had head injuries.

The other man was treated at the scene for superficial injuries.

Police later recovered two knives and a metal bar at the scene and arrested a 14-year-old and a 19-year-old, who have been bailed to return in early January, pending further investigation.

Bromley CID spokesman Detective Inspector Neil Smith said: "This was an appalling incident in which the victim suffered severe injuries. Fortunately, he appears to be pulling through, otherwise we would be looking at a murder.

"I am appealing to anyone who was in the area on Sunday night, or has any information about what was going on, to come forward."

Anerley ward councillor Bill MacCormick says he backs the police appeal for witnesses.

"Sadly, I can't say I'm unduly surprised about this," he said. There have been incidents like this in the Penge and Anerley areas before.

"Knives seem to be the weapon of choice now among young men of a certain age and increasing numbers of youths carry them for defensive as well as offensive purposes."
