Bill Le Sage died of lung cancer on Wednesday, October 31. He was a resident pianist every Sunday at Chalfont St Giles' Merlins Cave and was also known for his musical mastery on the vibraphones.
A friend and local jazz promoter David Hayes talks about this legendary performer.
I felt shattered and so disappointed when I heard of Bill's sudden death. He was a dedicated musician and an outstanding composer for the theatre, television and cinema. As a performer he leaves behind outstanding memories encapsulating virtually the history of British modern jazz.
Bill accompanied several jazz giants including Billie Holiday, Dizzie Gillespie and John Dankworth. Bill was also at the opening night of the Birdland Club in New York during the 1940s when Bird, Lester Young, Lennie Tristano and Stan Getz were on the bill. Even broadcaster and jazz trumpeter Humphrey Lyttleton was once quoted as calling Bill the 'Guv'nor'.
I was personally thrilled when Bill wanted to record a vibraphone trio album on my Mainstem label which was released last year.
Bill was working on several exciting projects right up until his illness was diagnosed in September this year. We had just finished recording a new album and I was dealing with the distribution when I found out the news. He will be greatly missed.
The new album contains a recording of Bill's performance at the Ealing Jazz Festival this year with the Be-Bop Quintet. If you wish to obtain a copy of the recording contact 01494 792776.
The album, priced at £10.95, is entitled Confirmation and proceeds will be donated to Imperial Cancer Research Fund in Bill's memory.
