SPEED cameras may have caught many drivers breaking the law but they have also helped police detect 298 other crimes, it has been revealed.

Since March, safety cameras across the county have been used to solve crimes ranging from stolen vehicles and false number plates to armed robbery, drug trafficking and a worldwide credit card fraud.

Essex Police's casualty reduction manager Brian Ladd said cameras had also helped with a case involving illegal immigrants and a Channel Tunnel ticket scam.

Mr Ladd said: "There has been concern expressed in some quarters, particularly the media, that operating and administering cameras is preventing the police from catching 'real' criminals.

"On the contrary, the safety cameras have provided intelligence and evidence in relation to many other crimes, some of which are very serious.

"We must not forget that many more people die or are injured as a result of inappropriate speed than is the case as a result of other criminal activity.

"Nevertheless, it is good to know that the cameras are serving a dual purpose by helping to identify other serious crimes as well as slowing down drivers and reducing casualty levels."

Essex County Council's traffic and safety manager Rosemary Welch said it was estimated that the cameras saved some 105 casualties in the first 12 months of the pilot scheme.

Numerous telephone calls have been received by the council welcoming the introduction of cameras in 30mph and 40mph areas and there have also been requests for more cameras.
