GRAVESEND & Northfleet kept up the pressure on Ryman Premier League leaders Canvey Island after an easy 2-0 win over Hitchin Town at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

The scoreline flattered the visitors as Fleet completely dominated the game right from the start.

Hitchin Town goalkeeper James Robinson was man of the match as he had to be at his best to keep the scoreline down.

Gravesend had chances to take the lead in the first few minutes Craig Wilkins and Paul Booth both spurning efforts and and Robinson saved from Darren Smith.

Hitchin had a rare chance when Jamie Turner parried a Carl Drew shot shortly after.

Fleet captain Jimmy Jackson was thwarted by Robinson in the 28th minute.

But three minutes before the break, he managed to get the goal Fleet deserved when his shot deflected off Tim Allpress and past the helpless Robinson.

In the second half, Fleet pressed hard to increase the lead and David Bass cleared Paul Booth's shot off the line in the 64th minute.

A minute later, Booth set up Rob Owen, but Robinson again saved.

As Gravesend were camped in the opposition half, striker Liam Hatch was brought on by Andy Ford. The substitution paid off, as with just five minutes to go, Hatch scored from an Owen cross to clinch the points.

Fleet are away to Cinderford Town on Saturday in the FA Umbro Trophy, kick off at 3pm.
