A FOOTBRIDGE over Deptford Creek will open next year, more than half a century since the toll bridge was closed.
The second link span of the Ha'penny Hatch, lowered into place earlier this month, will restore the pedestrian link between Greenwich and Lewisham, last used in the 1930s
Designed and built by Belvedere-based manufacturing company Inteserve, the span is now in place and remaining work on approach routes will be completed in the new year.
Chairman of the Creekside Partnership Board Councillor Jim Mallory said: "The completion of the second link span is a milestone for Deptford and people who live in the area.
"From the outset the bridge has been a powerful symbol between the two communities, which share so much and are neighbours in every sense of the word."
Once open it will be used by both pedestrians and cyclists, forming part of the London Cycle Network and connect to the Waterlink Way a series of cycle routes stretching from Greenwich to Crawley and onto the south coast as part of the national cycle network.
The work is funded by Greenwich and Lewisham councils, the Greenwich Development Agency and environment charity Sustrans.
