Croydon Council has made an official complaint to the rail authorities after learning local train services are to be cut.

The council has complained to the Strategic Rail Authority that the reduction in South Central's revised timetable undermines all the good work taking place to encourage travel by public transport'.

In his letter to the SRA, Iain Sim assistant director of planning and transportation, said: "Within a month of South Central starting operation of the franchise we found services getting much worse, with numerous cancellations made apparently at random.

"Now these timetabled reductions in services are not only causing enormous resentment locally and cynicism with the franchising process but undermine all the good work taking place to encourage travel by public transport for the sake of the environment and to relieve road congestion. How can councils possibly encourage modal shift to rail when South Central cannot even operate the basic timetable it signed up to run?"

Councillor Gerry Ryan, Croydon's cabinet member for highways, transportation and public services, is also approaching the Rail Regulator and South Central with observations on behalf of Croydon's thousands of rail commuters.
