A mystery donor splashed out an undisclosed fee to light up the life of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her husband Denis.
The couple celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary next month, to mark the occasion a well-wisher sponsored a light on North London Hospice's horse chestnut tree.
Some 2,000 lights on the tree at the hospice in Woodside Avenue, North Finchley, were switched on by Nicholas Bailey, aka EastEnders' Dr Anthony Truman, on Sunday. He was joined by a surprise guest co-star Alex Ferns, who plays Trevor.
Theresa Bowman, chief fundraiser for the hospice, said: "I cannot say who made the donation for Margaret and Denis Thatcher they wanted to remain anonymous.
"They (the Thatchers) are having a small celebration for their anniversary and instead of buying them a present the donor decided to put the light on the tree."
The annual Light Up A Life Appeal has so far raised a record-breaking £35,000. People have been sponsoring lights for a minimum of £5. All profits go towards the hospice's work with people who suffer from life-threatening illnesses.
