MR FARMER (Letters, November 22) should really not be surprised that the Government is funding an IT unit rather than beefing up direct support for the needy. Many of us recognise that Labour's priorities belong on a completely different planet to the one we inhabit.

Only the other day, Lord Falconer admitted that the cost of keeping the Millennium Dome closed, that is for the period from January to November 2001, has now risen to more than £21m. By the way that includes fees to a PR company. You may ask why a closed project requires public relations? Not being in the Government, I couldn't possibly comment.

I bet that money could have ameliorated an awful lot of health and social service problems in east London, including the awful waiting lists at King George Hospital.
