A Christmas appeal enabled by generous building society customers donating their pennies of interest to charity was launched at last week.

The funds raised by Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) members will be distributed to local Barnardo's projects, and other nominated causes.

And a new temporary member of staff, who is particularly cuddly, will be at the George Street branch until Christmas to help with the appeal and hand out prizes.

Customers and members of the public are invited to nominate local charities and good causes to share a special charity donation.

The building society already made a presentation of £1500 to the Starlight Children's Foundation.

The money has been generated through YBS's unique Small Change, Big Difference scheme, where customers donate their pence interest from their savings and mortgage accounts, to the society's Charitable Foundation.

Over 100,000 members have signed up so far generating over £34,000 and the Foundation wants to make sure that the money benefits local communities.

Stephen Dickie, Croydon's Yorkshire Building Society manager said "We look forward to welcoming members and non members to our branch and receiving their nominations of local good causes."

The Charitable Foundation is the focal point for the society's charitable giving and has helped over 500 charities and good causes with donations totalling more than £0.5 million in the last three years.

The prize draw runs from 23 November until Monday 24 December 2001 with each YBS branch presenting the winner with a Barnado's Teddy Bear.
