A football tournament in memory of a multi-medallist at the World Transplant Games is being organised in Friern Barnet.
Philip Young of High Road, East Finchley, became the first patient to undergo a succesful heart transplant operation at St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1987.
He competed in athletics, cycling, swimming, and volleyball and his determination impessed leading athletes Linford Christie and John Regis, who helped him with his training. After surviving several heart attacks, he died in July aged 58.
"My father was a marvellous man who was always looking to help others," said his son Martin.
He is organising the Philip Young Memorial Football tournament, which takes place at the Power League Centre, off Colney Hatch Lane, Friern Barnet, tomorrow at 7pm.
