THE front page of the Leyton and Leytonstone Guardian (November 15, Life for man who killed Doris) outlined the story of how my friend Doris Crystall was murdered.

When the assailant, Stetson Matthew, was sentenced, the judge remarked that Doris's 'remaining life should have been without fear or worry'.

Unfortunately, the time previous to her death had not been without worry for she had been harassed by the council, her landlord, for some time.

It had discovered that she was in possession of a small pension from the same borough and had demanded that she pay a greater rent than the other occupants of the flats where she lived. This caused her severe worry and concern.

On the reverse side of the coin, the murderer also lived in a council flat and it was revealed at the trial that he owed some £6,000 in back rent and it appeared that little attempt had been made to recover it.

The jury at the trial were very concerned about the unfairness of this situation.

I wonder what your readers think.
