Kingston is set to receive new environmental troops to help preserve and protect the area. There will also be a new river warden scheme.
The Civic Pride Volunteer scheme was backed by the Local Agenda 21 Forum at its meeting on Tuesday and funds should be made available next year.
The programme will encourage more volunteers to get involved in local environmental projects and will give out a Green Awards scheme to those who make a difference to the environment of the borough.
Furthermore, there are plans for a warden scheme for the Hogsmill River.
Coun Keith Witham, who proposed the venture, said: There is tremendous support for environmental projects to help make all areas of the borough cleaner and greener.
This scheme will encourage people to volunteer, give them the means to undertake local projects and recognise peoples efforts.
The council has an important role to play, but even more important is generating a sense of community and civic pride through active citizenship. Volunteering helps people to improve their neighbourhood.
