The first National Mouth Cancer Awareness Week was launched last week with the aim of reducing the number of people affected by the disease.
Around 3,800 people in the UK contract oral cancer a malignant growth that can occur in any part of the mouth, including the lips and tongue every year.
More than 1,700 will die of the disease, but many deaths can be prevented by early detection.
Trained dentists have a good chance of spotting the early stages of mouth cancer. The new campaign hopes to encourage people to undergo a examination, which is quick, simple and painless and requires no injection.
Neil Markham and Associates at Streatham Hill is now offering a mouth cancer screening service which aims to increase awareness of individual risk, and what can be done to reduce it. For further information call 020 8243 2266.
