VILLAGERS will be getting an early Christmas present when a new post office opens in Shorne.
The post office in The Street closed in September when the sub-postmaster retired and there was no-one to replace him.
Since then, many elderly residents have had to travel by public transport into Gravesend to collect their pensions.
Fortunately, Graeme Thomson, owner of The Village Stores, has agreed to open a new post office counter in his shop, which will open on December 13.
The new post office will have a modern counter, improved parking facilities and improved opening hours.
Shorne councillor Robin Theobald said: "There are certain things a village needs a school, post office, church and pub.
"This is why we are so pleased the village has its own post office again."
Gravesham MP Chris Pond echoed his delight and said: "The post office has been closed since September this year, causing inconvenience to many people.
"Local post offices play an important role in the community, particularly in rural areas, such as Shorne, and are especially needed by elderly residents and those who are without their own transport."
Rural transfer advisor for Post Office Ltd Peter Wilkinson said: "We had real fears local people would be left without post office services when no-one came forward to take up the challenge.
"However, we have worked very hard behind the scenes to identify a new postmaster.
"I am sure they will be as pleased with their new post office as we are."
The new post office, at 13a The Street, will be open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30pm and on Saturday from 9am to 12.30pm.
