Houses on Putney embankment were flooded when water swept across the embankment as a result of an abnormally high tide which came within inches of the record level.

Two houses, Bleak House and Chilveden House, and houses in Festing Road, had their downstairs flooded. The water was pumped out by firemen, who worked for two hours. The tide, which quickly subsided, was caused by high winds, recent heavy rain and seasonal changes. The water came over the embankment during the night and police with loudspeaker cars patrolled the riverside warning families. November 30, 1951

Wandsworth Council is to investigate claims that pensioners' luncheon clubs are being invaded by residents of neighbouring boroughs.

Wandsworth charges only six-and-a-half pence for a meal which costs up to 25p across the boundary. Mr Bertram Wilmore, secretary of Putney Liberal Association, told the WBN the meals were on a first come, first served basis and once the limited number of hot meals had been served only cold food was available. He said: "I know of one case of a woman who has just bought a £16,000 house in Wimbledon and still turns up for a six and a half pence meal." Wandsworth Council has promised to investigate the claims. December 3, 1976
