A wreath from the people of Sutton and Cheam will be laid where the twin towers of the World Trade Center used to stand this week, during a visit by MP Paul Burstow to New York's Ground Zero.
The Sutton and Cheam MP will also present a statuette on behalf of the London Fire Service while on a whirlwind trip to meet with United Nations representatives.
As secretary of a parliamentary group on the future of Afghanistan, his main duty will involve discussing the
UN's role in the future of the warring nation.
Before leaving, Mr Burstow said: "Residents of Sutton and Cheam feel a great deal of sympathy for the plight of the thousands of people who suffered in the terrorist attack of September 11.
"Many of my constituents commute to the city and had the attack happened here in London, it would have been the residents of communities such as ours that would have had to put the pieces back together again."
