I recently discovered, with the aid of a metal detector, a memorial plaque dedicated to a soldier who died in the First World War.
The soldier was named Sgt Rupert Archibald Thompson who served in the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment and came from Carshalton.
I have been able to learn that his family lived in Station Road, Carshalton, up until the 1960s but there the trail ends.
I would like to know if any reader knows of any surviving relatives of Sgt Thompson (who changed his name to Robert Arthur Thompson when he enlisted).
They can contact me on Stevenage 01438 226033 (evenings), or 01438 812812 (daytime).
