Putney tennis player Richard Mayers took the overall mens title in the finals of the Seymour Pierce Club Championships held in Mijas, Spain, writes Sally Jones.
But the tall, powerful Mayers was made to fight hard all the way by flamboyant 18-year-old Michael Oats of Totteridge LTC before clinching the title.
Oats had earlier survived a marathon semi-final against the experienced Birmingham
coach Gary Naughton.
But he kept up an impressive display of hitting in a well contested final.
However, Mayers extra experience and big serve finally told and he raised his game to snatch the title 6-4 6-4.
Mayers, an accountant for Arthur Anderson, said: It was a tremendous tournament. Michael played superbly in the final despite a long, exhausting semi in scorching heat and Im just delighted I held on to win.
Richard, of Westside TC, beat James Bird of Chichester 6-3 6-1 in his semi-final.
