THE danger of dying in a fire is less in Hillingdon than in almost any other borough.
Findings from London's Fire Authority show that Hillingdon has one of the lowest annual death rates with 2.4 deaths per million population (pmp) due to accidental fire and only three deaths between 1996 and 2000 due to accidental fire compared to the highest figures for Brent which saw 18 deaths.
"We believe the statistics have a lot to do with the level of fire awareness of people in the borough," said Borough Commander Ken Hammond. "We are very pro-active in promoting fire safety awareness and are going out in the borough to promote this awareness."
The report shows that in the revised period Hillingdon had only 2.4 more deaths pmp than Havering or the City, where there were none.
Hillingdon Fire Brigade is also urging householders to be especially vigilant over the festive season.
Mr Hammond said: "It is essential to get a smoke alarm on every floor level in your home, and fit it as soon as possible. Homes fitted with properly working smoke detectors will give extra time to escape."
He also stressed the importance of ensuring that candles are in a suitable holder and that they are out of the reach of children and that decorations are non-flammable or flame retardant. Before going to bed, all doors should also be closed
With the elderly most at risk from fire, friends, family and neighbours are also urged to pop in and check that they are safe.
