A decision by Barnet Council to allow a car wash to operate from Green Belt land at Copthall was this week described as "scandalous" by the Mill Hill Preservation Society.
Chairman John Turtle accused the council of being "shifty" in allowing the Mr Valet service to run from the Copthall Swimming Pools car park without planning permission.
But the council claimed it was not aware planning regulations had been breached because the facility was temporary. Mr Turtle said: "We think that this is a shifty way to avoid the planning regulations which they impose on everyone else and it is scandalous that the council should permit such an operation and structure on Green Belt land."
Kim Tighe, head of leisure and youth at the council, said the car wash was well used.
She added: "We are not aware that a temporary structure like this one breaches any planning regulations but are looking into the matter."
