MORE than 100 Wood Green residents who are opposing plans to erect a mobile phone antenna in Albert Road have held a meeting to voice their concerns.
The residents, alarmed about health implications from the BT Cellnet antenna, invited the company's regional communications manager, James Stevenson, to the meeting in a bid to persuade him to drop the plan.
Throughout the meeting they bombarded the manager with questions about harmful radiation associated with the antennae.
Alexandra ward councillor Peter Droussiotis, who attended the meeting said: "The main concern of residents is that there has been no conclusive evidence to show that these masts have no potential adverse effect on people's health."
He added: "A precautionary principle should apply. The site is in a densely populated area and my view is that the health of local children should take precedence over commercial interest."
Resident and campaign co-ordinator Steve Palmer said he was heartened to see such a committed group of local people working together for the good of the area.
He said: "The key message is that we are not against mobile phone masts in themselves but they should not be erected in a residential area like ours for as long as doubts persist on the effect on people's health."
