THE EAGLE in Snaresbrook could become more than just a pub if planning permission is given to build a mini hotel behind it.
Six Contents Retail, which owns the listed pub in Hollybush Hill, wants to take it back to its coach inn roots by turning an existing function room into a 25-bedroom lodging.
Guests would be able to book rooms over the bar and eat in the pub's Toby carvery restaurant.
Janice Clarke, of Six Contents Retail, said: "It will be an Innkeeper's Lodge. People want budget hotel accommodation. We try to cater for that need.
"We have 50 of these hotels around the country adjoined to pubs. They are comfortably furnished and customers can eat in the restaurant. It is convenient and very popular."
The proposed two-floor structure was designed by JTS Planning Partnership, which says that the building would be in keeping will the style of the local landmark.
Nick Davey, a partner in the firm, said: "We will make sure the design and scale are right. The Eagle has a distinctive character with its ornate front elevation.
"We will replace the existing building at the back of the pub in a way that is complementary to the Eagle."
The planning application is scheduled to go to Redbridge Council's conservation advisory panel on January 2. It may be brought before councillors at the area one committee meeting on January 7.
