RESIDENTS on a Wanstead estate are calling on Redbridge Council to give them a base to meet as a community.
People living on the Hermitage Estate were told they could have a community centre on the estate but have now been informed that this plan has been put on hold.
Resident Christine Free said everyone was angry that once again their needs have been ignored.
Mrs Free asked if a one-bedroom flat on the estate could be found where the residents association could meet.
Youth workers have also called for facilities to be made available for the youngsters who live on the estate.
Speaking at Monday's area one committee meeting, Mrs Free said: Our hopes were raised last year when we were told that a community centre could be built on our estate.
Now it has all fallen through because of the unsuitability of the location. We've been told the plan has been put on the backburner for now.
The residents association is there for the people of the estate, yet it has nowhere to meet, to discuss issues or problems.
Youth worker Nigel Godfrey said a facility that could cater for youngsters was desperately needed and would prevent so many teenagers having to travel far out because there was nothing for them to do.
He said: We have had a few letters from youngsters who are unhappy that once again their needs have been ignored."
Mrs Free said the elderly on the estate were also concerned at the lack of facilities on the estate.
She said: Many of them are too frightened to venture out too far. If there was a central place, like a community centre on their doorstep, then they would be able to enjoy some social activities and take a more active part in their community."
Mrs Free added: Our concern is that as a residents association, we cannot operate properly because we have nowhere to meet.
Residents were also concerned at the lack of consultation over the plans for the centre's location on the estate.
Cllr Sue Nolan said: We are fully aware of the problems on the estate and the need for a centre.
Councillors on the area one committee didn't see the consultation document before it went out and so were not able to comment on it.
Committee chairman Cllr Greg Eglin said: We will be asking housing officers if a one-bedroom flat can be found to accommodate the association."
