Kingston RSPCA has issued a timely reminder to people that a pet is for life, not for Christmas.
Angela Connor, campaigns manager, said people do not often realise the financial commitment and practicalities involved in buying a pet.
She said: Many people still buy animals without giving much thought to whether they can afford to look after them properly.
The financial commitment not only includes neutering and food but regular inoculations and flea control.
She said the animal might not always fit in with the rest of the family and any older pets.
Time and again the RSPCA is called out to rescue older animals that have been thrown out of home in favour of the new pets, she added.
The branch will not home any animals between Monday. December 17, and Tuesday, January 2. The RSPCA emergency helpline is 08705 555 999.
