ON the 14th day of every month, a pensioner fasts all day in sympathy with the world's hungry.

Arthur Pay, 86, of Bulwer Road, Leytonstone, says it is sheer political stupidity that leaves large numbers of people starving.

"I do the fasting to align myself with the hungry of the world. There is no reason why people should be starving. There is enough food for everybody in the world," he said.

"We should do something about the people who are hungry in Afghanistan because these are the people that give terrorists their backing.

"If there was not tacit approval for the these actions the terrorists would not be able to continue with their actions as easily."

He is calling for a global approach to tackling poverty and famine and will continue to fast.

Mr Pay, who is a vegan, is also set to travel around the world on a Saga cruise.
