A SIX-FOOT dog was found wandering around the Acorn Ward for children at Whipps Cross Hospital last Wednesday. Normally, only guide dogs are allowed into the wards but an exception was made for a man in a big furry suit otherwise known as Ozzie Octave.
Ozzy, star of Hackney Empire's Christmas variety show The Fun Song Factory, made the special visit to try to cheer up the young patients on the children's ward.
He said: "I really enjoyed visiting the children and I'm delighted that I cheered them up. I hope that the children are well enough to come and see the show soon."
Ozzy also lent his support to the Acorn Appeal, which is supported by Guardian Newspapers, and was launched to provide extra home comforts in the ward such as more beds for parents and carers, TVs, videos and armchairs.
He said: "I wish the Acorn Appeal lots of success and hope it continues to grow and bring joy to the children."
Its target is to raise £100,000 by March, 31 2002. People wishing to make a donation or suggest a fundraising event should contact Sarah Gudgeon on 020 8535 6603.
Eileen Elms, Acorn Ward's manager, said: "We really appreciate the support shown by Hackney Empire and the cast, and the time and effort made to cheer up the children."
The Fun Song Factory at Christmas runs until January, 13 2002, at the Hackney Empire. Performances at 10.30am and 1.30pm. Tickets available from the box office on 8985 2424, priced £7 for adults and £5.50 for children.
